The opening scene of Evening sees a young woman tranquilly relaxing aboard an abandoned yacht softly bobbing up and down in the water, set against the background of a beautiful sunset. But we soon discover that the woman in the picture, Ann, (Clare Danes) is far from at a peace with herself.
Fast-forwarding to the present, we now see a dying Ann (Vanessa Redgrave) on the brink of senility, reminiscing about her past love and surrounded by her daughters. Her life is presented to us in flashback through the decades, and we learn of what happens one fateful day that continues to haunt her.
The day in question is the day she falls in love with a man she meets at her best friend Lila’s (Mamie Gummer) wedding. However, Lila – who tries to hide her own emotions – is clearly still in love with the man that Ann has fallen for. And in an unparalleled twist, Lila finds that there is also competition from her own brother for the same man!
Evening features several Hollywood heavyweights: Meryl Streep, Vanessa Redgrave, Toni Collette, Glenn Close and Clare Danes who all deliver strong performances. There is also the peppering of some entertaining and emotive scenes such as when young Ann and her brother dance together, before the wedding and when an older Ann, this time with young children, abandoned by a ghastly husband, struggles to find the balance between giving her girls the attention that they need and doing practical things such as making the dinner.
I think both the story and characters in the film will really appeal to women. Evening sweeps you up and serves up a lifetime of joy and sadness, but leaves you feeling hopeful that although experiences can knock you down, you can find the strength to pick yourself back up.
